Visa 485
Visa 485 (Graduate Temporary Visa) is a temporary visa that the Australian Government reserves for international students who have completed a course of at least 2 years at an Australian school.
After being granted a 485 visa, you will have an additional 18 months to 4 years (depending on the field of qualification) to live and work legally in Australia.

Requirements of Visa 485 – Graduate Work Stream
- International students have completed a 2-year course in Australia.
- You must have a skilled occupation on the relevant Medium and Long Term Strategic Skilled List (MLTSSL).
- You must satisfy the Australian Study requirement within the last 6 months unless a concession applies.
- Your qualifications must be closely related to your nominated occupation.
- You must have a positive skills assessment from the relevant skills assessing authority in relation to your nominated occupation.
- English level: PTE 58 or IELTS 6.5. However, results from other English tests such as OET, PTE, TOEFT iBT, or CAE are also accepted.
- Under 50 years old at the time of application.

How does November 5, 2011, affect the 485 Post Study Work Stream visa?
- You are only allowed to apply for a Post Study Work 485 visa only if your study abroad application is submitted and a student visa is issued after November 5, 2011.
Cases where you CAN NOT apply for a 485 Post-Study Work Stream visa
- Apply for a student visa before November 5, 2011. After this date, you will be issued a student visa
- Holding a dependent student visa issued before November 5, 2011.
- If you have held a student visa issued before November 5, 2011. For some reason, you return home and return to Australia a few years later with a new student visa. You still CAN NOT apply for this visa even if you apply for a new student visa.
Cases CAN apply for 485 Post-Study Work Stream visa
- If you applied to study abroad before November 5, 2011, but were rejected. A few years later, you applied to study abroad again and were granted permission after November 5, 2011. Then you CAN apply for a 485 visa in the Post-Study Work Stream format.
Requirements of Visa 485 – Post-Study Work Stream
- You must hold or have held a relevant student visa which application was made on or after 5 November 2011. This visa must have been your first student visa.
- Complete 2 years in Australia with a Bachelor’s degree or higher.
- You must hold a Bachelor’s Degree, Bachelor (Honours) Degree, Masters by Coursework Degree, Masters by Research Degree, Masters (Extended) Degree, or a Doctoral Degree within 6 months from the course completion date.
- Your qualifications were awarded by an institution registered on the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students.
- You must satisfy the Australian Study requirement within the last 6 months unless a concession applies.
- English proficiency: PTE 58 (minimum Listening 48, Reading 48, Speaking 42, Writing 51) or IELTS 6.5 (minimum 5.5 for each skill) or holding a passport from the UK, USA, Canada, or New Zealand. However, results from other English tests such as OET, PTE, TOEFL, iBT, or CAE are also accepted.
- Under 50 years old at the time of application.
Subjects can get Visa 485
To be able to get a 485 visa, you must be an international student who has completed courses with CRICOS. Most schools have this, except very small schools. Or schools only offer one 4~8 week course.
WHAT YOU CAN DO
This visa allows you to:
- stay in Australia for the period that aligns with the activities you have been approved to undertake on this visa. The maximum stay periods allowed are:
- Graduate Work Stream – up to 18 months
- Post Study Work Stream– up to four years
- do work or activity specified in your application
- bring eligible family members with you to Australia
- enter and leave Australia as many times as you want while your visa is valid.
